Schwarz Etienne began in 1902, when Paul Arthur Schwarz and his wife Olga Etienne founded a movement workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, combining their surnames to name the brand. For decades the company built its reputation supplying precision movements to other watchmakers, including names such as Chanel and Dunhill.

Schwarz Etienne now operates as a fully integrated manufacture, producing its own movements and components in-house, including its own hairspring, a rare capability among independent watchmakers.
