Guide to Diamond Clarity

Diamonds are naturally brilliant and beautiful, possessing many desirable characteristics. Whether mined from the earth or grown in a laboratory, each diamond produces an unmistakable and unforgettable light display. One of diamonds most fascinating qualities is their uniqueness: Every diamond has a blend of imperfections and eccentricities that give them a distinctive identity. Lacking these flaws makes them all the more special and rare. For those who prefer brilliance and a flawless view into a radiant diamond’s light and beauty, it’s essential to find a diamond with a high clarity rating. Learn more about diamond clarity and why it’s important with Manfredi Jewels.

What is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity refers to the number of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond and is one of the four Cs that gemologists use to grade gemstones. The scale ranges from “flawless” (FL) to “included” (I). Flawless diamonds are very rare, making up 0.5% of all diamonds. Inclusions are inside the diamond and include knots, clouds, cavities, laser lines, and drill holes. Blemishes are found on the stone’s surface and include nicks, pits, scuffs, scratches, spots, and abrasions. Some flaws can’t be seen by the naked eye, whereas others are plainly visible.

Why is Diamond Clarity Important?

Diamonds are inherently attractive and desirable, but they aren’t always the marvelous gemstones we know and adore. Only 20% of diamonds have a high enough clarity to be suitable for jewelry; those that aren’t are used for industrial or commercial purposes. Of those that are the right quality, only a select few are clear enough to allow the stone to shine its brightest. Inclusions and blemishes can distract the viewer from the diamond’s shine and luster. Many place great emphasis on a diamond’s clarity, even preferring smaller high-quality stones than larger lower-quality gems. Ultimately, clarity is important for those who value it.
